Old Town Famagusta
Kyrenia Harbour
Three decades ago when the Greeks attempted to annexe the island, Turkish troops landed in response and Cyprus was partitioned. This has resulted in Northern Cyprus becoming one of the last unspoilt corners of the Mediterranean often described as a “corner of the Earth touched by Heaven”, while its Southern counterpart has become increasingly overdeveloped.
Known for its long hot summers and its short mild winters, Northern Cyprus boasts an ideal opportunity for a tranquil and relaxed vacation.
The charming harbour-town of Kyrenia (only a stone’s throw away) is seeped in history and bustles with bars, top-quality reasonably priced restaurants and shops of all description. For the adventurous visitor, opportunities for aquatic activities and outdoor pursuits abound. For those looking for a more tranquil experience, there are numerous day-sailing trips available.
The Abbey at Bellapais which Lawrence Durrell made famous when he wrote “Bitter Lemons of Cyprus”, overlooks the Mediterranean and the Turkish coastline, and lies nestled beneath the Besparmak mountains. Bellapais also contains numerous excellent restaurants and boasts an annual music festival.
The stunning beaches found along the Northern coastline are within easy reach of Kyrenia, rarely experience overcrowding and provide safe, clean bathing.
Within an hour’s drive of Kyrenia lies the Karpas peninsula. This region, also known as the “pan-handle”, is at the eastern end of Cyprus where the land stretches out towards Turkey. It is almost unpopulated save for the tiny fishing villages of Bogaz and Kumyali. Modern life has passed the Karpas by. The wild beaches here, some sand, some rock, are great for walking, although there is little shade in the height of the summer. Ancient tombs, ruins and Byzantine churches are scattered across the whole region.
The medieval town of Famagusta/Gazimagusa is rich in cultural sites such as Lala Mustafa Pasa Mosque, which dates from the early 1300’s. Nearby lie the ruins of Salamis, which includes a roman villa, several basilicas and a theatre for 15,000 spectators. The Famagusta bay abounds with long, quiet, sandy beaches.
