Golf
The Vikla Golf and Country Club was founded in 1992, designed by Robin Houry. It is situated near the village of Vikla in Cyprus, close to Larnaca and a 20km drive from Limassol. For €34 you can play all day, and this price includes club hire, balls, tees and water.
This golf club is one of the more relaxed in Cyprus and prides itself on customer service; the dress code here is casual and a handicap certificate is not required.
The clubhouse at the Vikla Golf and Country Club has an excellent standard of drinks and bar snacks to offer at affordable prices, and, for those who are not golfers, there is a swimming pool and outside terrace overlooking the green to enjoy. The pro shop has clubs and trolleys available to hire and an excellent selection of golfing equipment for sale.
Fishing
Fishing is available throughout the island and the nearest available would be approximately 20 minutes drive.
Scuba Diving
The waters around Larnaca are clear enough for excellent diving conditions. There are several sites to choose from, but most divers come to see the wreck of the Zenobia. This ferry sank in 1980 on her maiden voyage due to a ballast error. Fully laden with a number of trucks loaded and their cargo, the ship now lies 42 metres deep, on the bottom of the sea. The top of the wreck is just 18 metres below the surface, making it easily accessible to divers of most levels.
Beach
There are long areas of safe, sandy beaches which stretch for miles along the coast in Larnaca. Nearly all of them are run by the Cyprus Tourism Organisation of Public Beaches. Most of the beaches have bars and restaurants, and offer full facilities for swimmers and sunbathers such as changing rooms and beach furniture for hire.
The two most popular beaches in Larnaca are McKenzie and Dhekelia beaches. McKenzie Beach is situated on the outskirts of the city centre, less than five minutes drive from the airport. This beach is famous for its beautiful white sand and clean refreshing waters. Here you can enjoy many water sports and even do some scuba diving. There is also an excellent selection of restaurants which are well-known among locals for their fresh seafood and Cypriot cuisine.
Dhekelia Beach goes on for miles and forms the backdrop for many of Larnaca’s four and five-star resorts. This is one of the best places to socialise and people-watch, as many of the tourists sunbathe here. There are lots of water sports on offer as well as other beach activities such as volleyball. A number of decent restaurants and bars round off this excellent beach.
One of the more popular beaches for serious water activities is Dasoudi Beach. Not quite as crowded as some of the other beaches, this is the place for windsurfing, parasailing, waterskiing and any other active water sport you can think of. The beach also has a complete set of facilities for visitors such as sun loungers and other equipment for rent, and a couple of beachside cafés.
The other two main beaches around town are Geroskipou Beach and Larnaca Beach. Both of these strips of sand are great for swimming and water sports, and have a number of restaurants with all the expected facilities on site.
Ski
Troodos Mountain Range is approximately 69 Km from Larnaca.
Cyprus is an island of extremes. During the winter months you can bask in 70°F heat on the coast in the morning and go skiing in the snowfields of the Troodos Mountains in the afternoon! It is a magical island that is truly full of surprises.
Snow falls in the Troodos Mountains from mid-December through to the end of March courtesy of the infrequent winter storms that pass over the island. At an altitude of above 4500ft the snow accumulates, especially on north facing slopes. Mount Olympus (altitude 6402ft) has a cap of snow on it for three or four months of the year, and is where the Troodos Skiing Resort is based.
The Troodos Skiing Resort is the focus for skiing on the island. It is situated in a col between Mount Olympus and one of the other peaks in the Troodos range. Alpine skiing and cross country trails can be enjoyed by skiers at the resort. There are four slopes - two on the North Face of Mount Olympus and two in Sun Valley. Each has a t-bar lift system and equipment rental station.
All levels of skiing ability are catered for on the slopes. The Hera Lift on the North Face and Aphrodite Lift at Sun Valley are more suitable for beginners. Intermediate skiers will feel right at home on the Hermes slope in Sun Valley, while advanced skiers will enjoy the Zeus run located on the North Face of Mount Olympus.
The best time to book a skiing trip to Cyprus is in February and March. Normally there is sufficient powdery snow depth in the mountains by this time. By the end of March the stronger sunshine has started to transform the powder to corn snow, signalling the end of the ski season.
Accessibility
There are communal disabled facilities ie disabled toilets and showers and disabled ramps making this an ideal holiday location for disabled clients.
Outside
There is a lovely communal swimming pool which is a fair size and suitable for all ages. This is surrounded by a large terrace area ideal for sunbathing and loungers are available on the complex. The gardens are well maintained and planted and are very pretty.
