The historic buildings in Oundle are of exceptional architectural quality and mostly date from the 17th and 18th centuries. The staircase in the Talbot Hotel is said to have come from Fotheringhay Castle, where Mary Queen of Scots was executed in 1587. Barnwell Castle was the home of Princess Alice and belongs to the Montague family.
Oundle has a delightful farmers market and a variety of interesting shops and restaurants. Known in Anglo-Saxon times as Undela, or Undalum, the town is almost surrounded on three sides by the River Nene. There are 400 miles of footpaths and bridleways to choose from. Walk, cycle, sail, fish, eat, play or just to take a breath of fresh air, Willow Cottage provides these ideal opportunities.
Nearby there are some fantastic attractions including Barnwell Country Park. The park is located on the southern boundary of Oundle, nestling in the Nene Valley water meadows, Barnwell Country Park offers picnic meadows, BBQ area, waterside walks, wildlife garden, fishing, nature trails, bird hides and an adventure playground. The park has numerous lakes, ponds and meadows in a loop of the river Nene and is a haven for wildlife including swans, geese, otters, heron, kingfishers, grebes, ducks and other wildlife. An ideal place for picnics, a leisurely stroll or a family day out. There is a Ranger service for help, advice and information, a shop with countryside gifts and toys and refreshments are available.
