Cahors, the capital of the Lot, is situated on the river Lot 12km away, with its good selection of shops, cafes, bars, restaurants, museums, galleries and historic architecture. The beautiful 14th century Pont Valentre, the only fortified bridge with three towers, in the world, is the symbol of Cahors. The Wednesday and Saturday morning markets are stocked with local produce. Cahors is also known for its deep ruby red wines and the vineyard trail can be followed west of Cahors along the Lot valley to the beautiful medieval town of Puy-l'Eveque. St Cirq-Lapopie sits high above the Lot valley to the east of Cahors with a maze of lanes running between the attractive stone and half timbered buildings.
The beautiful town of Sarlat, north of Catus across the Dordogne river, situated in the Dordogne, with its many attractive bastide towns, vineyards and riverside activities, is just 20km away. Rocamadour, the most popular site in the Lot, is 30km north of Catus, with its ramparts and houses clinging to a rock face above the Alzou gorge. Nearby, many grottos and caves can be found in the Causse du Quercy, displaying their prehistoric paintings and engravings.
